When we think of Italian cars, we often think of major luxury brands like Ferrari and Lamborghini. But, in my opinion, the best Italian car is the Fiat Cinquecento (500).
A small city car; efficient, practical
Unlike “supercars” from Italian marques, the Fiat 500 is a practical and efficient vehicle. It seats up to four people and is actually more aerodynamic than some Ferraris. The folding rear seats allow for a large cargo area. It is easy to park and maneuver anywhere, and it is not a “rich person’s car”. In fact it is one of the cheapest vehicles to insure in the US. Over 50 years of manufacture and worldwide distribution have made parts affordable and plentiful, though the compact design means repairs take additional time. It is also more aerodynamic than the smaller, boxy Smart car. Since most commuting trips in the US have only one occupant, a larger vehicle is often superfluous.
Iteration and improvement with time
The Fiat 500 hasn’t changed much in terms of its overall design since it was introduced, though it has grown larger and with more technology. Iterative design is also found in the American auto manufacturer Tesla, which has changed its models very little over the years, particularly in terms of body style, while making improvements under the hood. Iteration over time reduces the cost of manufacture and development, and makes the vehicle instantly recognizable.
Unique style in a world of generic automobili
Modern vehicles, for the most part, look similar. This is not by accident; emissions and safety regulations dictate design. Manufacturers also copy each other; for example, Land Rovers and Tesla models both now feature retracting exterior door handles (which are going to be banned in China in a couple years). Many pickup trucks have a nearly flat hood, and manufacturers now want to use cameras and displays to make up for the increasing blind spots.
Smaller vehicles are better for the safety of others; more massive, oversize vehicles are a danger to other road users. The Fiat is the smallest car available in the US market.
